Storen Financial Employee Shares Her Experience With the Young Professionals Program
As a working person in my twenties, I entered the Young Professionals Program at Storen Financial having limited to no knowledge of how to build financial security other than through budgeting and managing my credit. I was unaware of how important tax strategies were when considering retirement plans like the Roth 401k, what my risk tolerance when investing should be (Spoiler alert: it should be high), and especially how I should strategize the all-too-real post-college debt management. Like so many of my generation, I left college and headed into the job market feeling overwhelmed and unprepared for the financial world.
I didn’t need to fret long, thankfully. By working with my Financial Advisor, Kiran Sharma, I’ve gained access to countless resources that I now know I can take advantage of to establish long-term and short-term goals. She and the rest of the Storen Advisory team have answered once migraine-inducing questions like, “How much should I contribute to my employer retirement plan? When and how do I start investing? How much should I save per month based on my current income and desired retirement age? What kind of emergency fund can I build and still feel like I am enjoying the money I make?”
The Young Professionals Program has also helped me learn why it’s so crucial to not just rely on a budgeting app but also to know what’s going on in my accounts. This is because regularly monitoring what I’m spending allows me to spot when there are billing errors and extra fees that might otherwise go unnoticed. Not only that, I’ve learned how important it is to add beneficiaries to all my accounts in the event of something happening to me as well as having a Power of Attorney, i.e., a trusted person who is called if I’m ever in a serious medical emergency. Overall, meeting with a Financial Advisor allowed me to hash out in real-time all the pesky, niggling questions I had and helped me avoid sticky situations – like paying unnecessary tax on a previous employer’s retirement plan that I originally planned to cash out…which would have been less than ideal!
Although I could easily take the “I’m still young; I have time” approach, I know that if I hadn’t been instilled with the knowledge the Young Professionals Program provides, I wouldn’t have started thinking seriously about what my future will look like in the next ten, twenty, and thirty years. I wouldn’t have started taking the small steps that can have a big impact. Kiran and her team take the guesswork out of the large and daunting “What’s next?” questions and gave me the “Here’s how…” Now, I’m walking into the next phase of my financial journey feeling confident I can be successful in the life I want to live.
