In the past six months, Intuit, the maker of QuickBooks, rolled out several new features for their online users. Here are three time-saving features:
1) Receipt Capture is a great documentation feature.
According to QuickBooks: Nothing says “tax time” like a shoebox overflowing with your crumpled receipts. That’s something we’re determined to change—starting with new Receipt Capture in QuickBooks Online.
You can now snap and store receipts digitally to save hours of labor throughout the year. Receipts are automatically categorized and matched to transactions, so everything is organized and ready at tax time.
How it works: Snap receipt photos on your phone, then add them to QuickBooks Online in one of three ways:
- Scanning directly through the mobile app.
- Uploading, then dragging and dropping.
- Forwarding by email.

2) Keeping track of your mileage is a breeze with QuickBooks Online’s mileage tracker.
QuickBooks has this to say about it:
Mileage tracking, previously only available for QuickBooks Self-Employed, will soon be available to all versions of QuickBooks Online. We’re rolling it out incrementally, so you might not see the feature right away, but all users should have access in the next several months.
When it comes to tax deductions for mileage expenses, most small businesses and self-employed professionals end up leaving money on the table. It’s so easy to forget to log a trip, lose track of information from third-party trackers or skip the hassle of manually logging your miles.
How it works: Just download the QuickBooks Online app, enable mileage tracking and drive. It’s that easy. When you hop in your vehicle, your phone automatically senses that you’re driving and uses GPS tracking to measure the distance. When you arrive, QuickBooks prompts you to categorize the mileage with a simple swipe. All of your trips are stored in one convenient location within the app, and you can see detailed mileage reporting and potential tax savings estimates at any time.

3) QuickBooks Online’s automated workflows will absolutely improve your productivity.
As a business owner, doing the little admin jobs can suck time away from more valuable tasks. QuickBooks Online’s automated workflows will absolutely improve your productivity. Here’s their take on this new feature:
Focus your attention on more important tasks by automating specific workflows in QuickBooks Online Advanced. Automation frees up time for tasks that matter while also reducing errors that can be made with manual processes, especially as the business grows.
How it works: Advanced Workflows turn your time-consuming manual processes into automated processes. You can create workflows for things like sending an email to customers when an invoice is overdue, or set reminders to make bank deposits, send invoices and more.
