Well-designed systems allow the business to explode with growth

In the last few entries of Coach’s Corner, we have discussed the need for processes. But the true backbone of any business is its systems. Based on that, how strong is the backbone of your business?

Your spine is made up of many essential components that allow your body to function properly. You have the vertebrae, arteries, nerves, ligaments and tendons, and the brain connected to this system. These components all work together to keep your body moving and functioning. You can compare this main support structure to a truly independent and thriving business. Well-designed systems that are functioning properly and as one can really allow the business to explode with growth.

Within a well-designed system are processes. These are the nerve endings of the business. They send the commands to the brain on what to do and when to do it. Now, think about your business system and processes. How well do they function and allow your business to truly thrive? When I say, “thriving growth,” I mean a growth spurt like when you were a teenager. Are you experiencing this type of progress?

If you are having difficulty thinking about what your business system might look like, let me provide some examples. Included in the system are checklists, orientation processes for new hires, a to-do list to open or close a retail shop or even the step-by-step method to make the product you are selling.

What does the backbone of your business look like? What do you struggle with? How have you straightened your business posture? I would love to hear more about the successes and struggles you’ve experienced as a business owner while establishing effective systems.
